When art creates hope...

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives.  It is the one that is the most adaptable to change”  -Charles Darwin

Who was Charles Darwin?
  • Charles Darwin was born in England on the 12th of February 1809, he died on the 19th of April 1882.
  • He is most famous for his work on natural selection, the idea that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors. This process involves favorable traits becoming more common in successive generations of living things while at the same time unfavorable traits become less common.

Review on Color Theory

Monday March 20th, 2012.

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” ~Ira Glass

Quote for the Day

If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful at all.
Michelangelo

Who is Michelangelo?

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (6 March 1475 – 18 February 1564), known as Michelangelo, was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer. Along with Leonardo da Vinci, he is often called a "Renaissance man" which means that he had great talent in many areas.
Michelangelo lived an extremely busy life, creating a great number of artworks. Some of Michelangelo's works are among the most famous that have ever been made. They include two very famous marble statues, the Pieta in Saint Peter's Basilica and David which once stood in a piazza in Florence but is now in the Accademia Gallery. His most famous paintings are huge frescos, the Sistine Chapel Ceiling and the Last Judgement. His most famous work of architecture is the east end and dome of Saint Peter's Basilica.
A lot is known about Michelangelo's life because he left many letters, poems and journals. Because he was so famous, he became the very first artist to have his biography (story of his life) published while he was still living.[2] His biographer, Giorgio Vasari, said that he was the greatest artist of the Renaissance. He was sometimes called Il Divino ("the divine one").[3] Other artists said that he had terribilità, (his works were so grand and full of strong emotion that they were scary). Many other artists who saw his work tried to have the same emotional quality. From this idea of terribilità came a style of art called Mannerism.

Assignment #1 ANGLE

Digital Photography 10                                                         Due: Feb 6, 2012

Good Afternoon class! Today we will finish uploading the photos to our flickr account and place your Three BEST Photos along with your reflections of why you chose them. The remaining 17 Photos I will have you upload onto your NEW flickr Account. (Please make two folders for your good and not so good photos along with the Title of the assignment, date, and image#. (Assignment#_Name+Initial_image#).

Ms. Thompson will be away today and a Substitute Teacher will be present. Have a good morning and I will see you in class at 2:10pm.

Assignment #1 An exercise in viewpoint / camera angle

In this class we’ve explored how viewpoint / camera angle can make an ordinary subject look extraordinary.  This is an especially important principle of composition to keep in mind since most of the subject matter surrounding the school is far from spectacular.  It’s up to you to make it look more interesting than it initially appears.  Don’t hesitate to lie on the ground or climb a tree to get the angle you need.

1.     Choose a subject to shoot (I highly recommend another person from this class).
2.     Take 20 photos of your subject from 20 unique angles.
3.     Choose your 3 best photos from the group and put them into the dropbox (H:drive) (HAND-IN folder).  Label them like so:

01_PeterJ_image1
01_PeterJ_image2
01_PeterJ_image3    >   (Assignment#_Name+Initial_image#)

4.     Also hand in a word document in which you write a few sentences about each photograph and why you feel it was one of your best.  Label it like so:

01_SmithJ_description

 ·        Remember to give yourself enough time at the end of class (at least 10-15 minutes) to put your pictures in your files and/or flash drive.
·        Before you hand in your camera, I will ask you to delete all the pictures you’ve taken as the cameras have limited memory.
·        Back up all your assignments on a flash drive.  Marked assignments will be deleted from the dropbox when they become stale.

Point to REMEMBER...

      Assignment #1  Angles in viewpoint...

Due: Monday Feb 6 at the start of class.

      Reminder:
Upload photos from your M Drive (school account) and upload to your newly created flickr account. Then erase those photos from M Drive into recycle bin. In your NEW flickr account create two folders titled GOOD photos and BAD photos where you will decide which goes where. This will show your progress throughout the semester.

We will review the Elements & Principles of Art in Photography....

GUIDELINES FOR ALL ART STUDENTS

Please:
  • leave your coat in your locker and take your hat off during class.
  • do not bring candy, drinks, chips etc into the classroom as it is messy and distracting. If you are working over the noon hour you may eat your lunch while you work but be sure to clean up after yourself.
  • remember to sign your work and include the number of your storage cupboard.
  • store your artwork in your assigned storage space. Do not leave work unclaimed in the drying rack for extended period of time. If your project is complete hand it in!
  • respect the personal belongings of your fellow students.
  • Clean after yourself.
  • Remember that the art office is the personal workspace of the art teachers; do not enter without permission
  • Place your chairs up on the tables if you are the last class of the day.

ATTENDANCE

  • You are expected to be here everyday. If you are away or ill, class goes on. You are responsible for work and time missed.
  • Most of the instructions are given during the first ten minutes of the period. If you do arrive late, come in quietly and get to work. If attendance has already been recorded, you are responsible for reporting your late arrival to the attendance office.
  • If you have to be absent or arrive late, a note from your home is appreciated. After several unexcused absences or late arrivals I will contact your home to discuss the situation and you and I will have a chat about the time missed.

EVALUATION

The assessment process is ongoing as part of the teaching and learning cycle. The intention is to suit the learning styles by employing multiple assessment strategies. The students are provided with the criterion with which they are assessed. It is important to note that each student is assessed in relation to the identified assessment criteria and not in relation to the work of other students. No mark for midterm & final assessments will be officially assigned without a dialogue between the teacher and student.

  • All projects will be given a mark out of ten.      ____/10marks

  • Investigation Work Book and Developmental Activities. (PROCESS)                40%
  • Studio work and complete “Masterpieces”. (PRODUCT)                                  60%
  • End Term Final Assessment – Accumulated mark representing
Product and Process through the semester                                       85%
  • Independent Project                                                                                     15%

  • Attitude, attendance and work habits make up 15% of the final mark for all grades. This should be an easy 15% to as this is an optional class that you have chosen to take; it is assumed that you like art and want to be here!
  • Projects are due at the end of the assigned time period. Unfinished work may be completed on your own time and handed in before the next report period.
  • Bonus marks may be earned for attending art shows or making gallery visits on your own time. (One mark per visit. 5marks max per term.)

What is Art?

Visual ART

    What is Art?

  • Why are the arts important?
  • What do the subjects that make up the arts have in common?
  • What are the roles of emotion and reason in the arts?
  • To what extent do other Diploma Programme subjects have artistic qualities?
  • What are the standards by which we judge art? Can we justify these standards, and, if so, how?
  • What moral responsibilities does the artist have? Are they different to those of any other “knower”?
  • Does the artist have a responsibility to reflect on the values, beliefs and attitudes of his or her time and place?
  • To what extent does the work of the artist influence the culture in which it was created? To what extent does the existing culture influence the artist working within it?
  • Is it possible for artistic expression in visual arts to take the place of words?
  • Is it important for artworks to be original? Why?
  • Is art simply an imitation of an idea?
  • Is the artist’s intention relevant to the viewer?
  • What do we expect from art? Truth? Seduction? Provocation? Beauty?
  • What does it mean to say “I know an artwork”?
